In the modern town coat of arms, a hand clasping a heart illustrates the popular etymological interpretation of Manacor, namely man a cor ‘hand on the heart’. However, the name of the town comes from the name of the Berber clan Mancur, who inhabited the area before the Catalan conquest. The locals call themselves Manacorí or Manacorina.
