Location:
Portocolom (often also referred to as Porto Colom) is located in the south-eastern part of the Spanish island of Mallorca. Far away from mass tourism, the old fishing village, which belongs to the municipality of Felanitx, with its approx. 4,000 inhabitants is an insider tip for holidaymakers looking for relaxation and tranquillity. The original character of the old Mallorcan fishing village has been preserved, even though the number of visitors increases every year: Many of Portocolom's locals still earn their living from fishing today. The bay of Portocolom also has the largest and most famous natural harbour on the Balearic island. Although it is now largely used for private boat traffic, it is still one of the most important fishing harbours in Mallorca. Accordingly, the fish restaurants in Porto Colom are particularly notorious. The town is divided into an old town area (harbour), which is considered one of the best preserved old town centres on the island, and an urbanisation area (around Cala Marcal). It is also said of Porto Colom that the world-famous explorer Christopher Columbus was born here: The ‘Colom’ part of Porto Colom is therefore derived from the seafarer's surname.
