Banyalbufar. A mountain village in the Tramuntana Mountains. A World Heritage Site since 2011

April is one of the best months for hiking. Today we're going to Banyalbufar on the west coast of Mallorca.

The hiking trail starts just behind the car park in Banyalbufar. With a hiking guide, the walk is more relaxed. The climb is rewarded with a dream view.

The name Banyalbufar comes from Arabic, but also has Catalan elements. It means something like "founded by the sea".

In fact, the picturesque village with its more than 2000 terraced fields nestles harmoniously against the Mediterranean.

The natural stone walls and an irrigation system were created by the Moors as early as the 10th century. This brought the precious water from the mountains. A sophisticated pipeline system was created through which the fields could be cultivated. Originally, grapevines were grown there, the Malvasia grape, one of the oldest grape varieties in the Mediterranean. Today, tomatoes and vegetables are mainly grown there.

The idyllic village impresses with its small streets and natural stone houses, which offer a remarkable sea view. With the village of Esporles in the neighborhood and the stone beach of Port des Canonge, as well as the impressive holm oak forests all around, it always attracts many hiking enthusiasts.
