The Coves de Campanet - A hidden gem in Mallorca
As a real estate agent with an eye for the special places on our beautiful island, I am delighted to introduce you to the Coves de Campanet today - a fascinating stalactite cave that is off the beaten tourist track.
This cave was discovered in 1948 when a Mallorcan wanted to build a house in the region. While digging, he noticed that warm air was flowing out of the ground. His curiosity led him to dig further - and finally brought this impressive cave to light.
The Coves de Campanet impress with their spectacular stalagmites and stalactites. These impressive limestone formations, more precisely they are made of calcium carbonate, have developed unique shapes over thousands of years that allow the imagination to run wild. They are one of the most enchanting natural wonders on earth. But how do they actually form?
It all starts with rainwater that seeps through the ground and the rock layers. Along the way, the water dissolves carbon dioxide from the air and soil, making it slightly acidic. This acidic water then dissolves small amounts of lime from the surrounding rock.
When the water finally drips into the cave, the environment changes: the carbon dioxide escapes and the lime is deposited as a fine solid. When the water drips from the cave ceiling, stalactites form there, growing from top to bottom. Stalagmites form on the cave floor - they grow from bottom to top because the dripping water also leaves lime there.
It takes thousands, sometimes even hundreds of thousands of years for these fascinating formations to form. So each individual layer tells us a story from a time long past. If you look closely, you can sometimes see nuances of color - this comes from tiny traces of other minerals such as iron or manganese that were also deposited."
The so-called "organs" are particularly fascinating, the shape of which actually reminds us of the pipes of a church organ.
Inside the cave, temperatures are pleasant at 20 to 22 degrees all year round, making it a perfect day trip destination - whether in the hot summer or on cooler days. The cave is easily accessible and suitable for visitors of all ages.
Another advantage of the Coves de Campanet is that they are not as crowded as the well-known Cuevas del Drach in Porto Cristo or the caves of Artá. Here, in the off-season, you can enjoy the beauty of the cave in peace and let the magical atmosphere work its magic on you.
There is a spacious car park available for your visit, and the attached restaurant invites you to round off the trip with a delicious meal. Entry for adults is 17 euros - an investment that is definitely worth it if you want to experience the hidden treasures of Mallorca.
A trip to the Coves de Campanet is not only a highlight for cave lovers, but also a great way to discover the lesser-known sides of the island. Let yourself be enchanted by this unique place!
